October 5-9, 2005 Race Results
After starting our with and overnight rain the few clouds left in the east provided a great sunrise. By the 9 AM shot gun start the skis were clear for a cool start out of Commons Beach in Tahoe City. This was the 9th year that the Lake Tahoe Marathon provided the female athletes a head start with the men having to chase them down to win the bonus. The idea is to have close finish and this year it worked to perfection with Samuel J from Kenya, who trains in New Mexico, catching Kristi Arthur at the finish and nipping her by 2 seconds.
We crowned a new Tahoe Triple champion last night at the Awards Party. Thomas Reiss ran away from the field and set 4 course records. Reiss broke the 3 course records each day he ran as well as the event record. His Marathon times were:
2:57:16, 2:54:55, and 3:02:51 for a three day record of 8:55:02 breaking the old record of 9:28:01 by Sean Meissner. The women's record was also broken by Laura Bleakley with consecutive Marathon's of 3:34, 3:34:15, and 3:38:08 for a new record of 10:46.23 set last year by Deborah Hamberlin. The old record was 11:07:22.
During an otherwise very festive day we had a very sad event as 70 year old Ross Bailey, from Silver Springs, NV. passed away while in the last mile of the 10K. Paramedics were on the scene in seconds and the fire department in minutes. We extend our heartfelt sorry to the family and friends of our fellow runner who passed away doing what he loved.
Next year's Marathon will be Saturday September 30
